Why Industrial Cleaning Is Mission-Critical

Industrial systems accumulate contamination from fabrication, construction, operation, and environmental exposure. Without proper cleaning, contaminants degrade system performance, accelerate corrosion, promote microbial growth, and cause catastrophic failures.

Modern cleaning protocols are governed by rigorous standards including ASTM A380 for stainless steel cleaning, ASTM A967 for passivation, and ASME BPE for bioprocessing equipment. CXP follows all applicable standards with complete documentation.

Industrial Cleaning FAQs

What is the difference between cleaning and passivation?

Cleaning removes contamination (oils, debris, scale, biological growth) from surfaces. Passivation is a separate chemical treatment that removes free iron and enhances the chromium oxide layer for corrosion resistance. Industrial cleaning is typically performed first as surface preparation, followed by citric acid or nitric acid passivation for stainless steel systems. Both are often required for proper system commissioning.

How long does industrial cleaning take?

Duration depends on system size, contamination level, and method. A typical CIP cleaning cycle takes 2–4 hours. Complete system cleaning with chemical circulation may require 1–3 days. Complex multi-phase cleaning with passivation can take 3–5 days. CXP provides detailed scheduling during project planning to minimize your downtime.

What cleaning methods are used for heat exchangers?

Methods depend on fouling type: acid cleaning removes mineral scale (calcium carbonate, silica), alkaline cleaning removes organic fouling and biofilm, and mechanical cleaning removes heavy deposits. CXP assesses fouling composition and selects the optimal method to restore thermal efficiency. Learn more on our heat exchanger cleaning page. Use our chemical dilution calculator for concentration planning.

Can you clean systems with microchannels (cold plates)?

Yes. CXP specializes in cold plate and microchannel cleaning for data center liquid cooling. These require controlled low-pressure flushing (typically 3–5 ft/sec) with staged filtration down to 5μm to prevent particle damage to channels as small as 50–100μm. Standard high-velocity flushing methods can damage microchannels—we use specialized protocols instead.

Do you provide emergency cleaning services?

Yes. CXP offers 24/7 emergency response for critical cleaning situations including contamination events, validation failures, and urgent commissioning requirements. Our mobile equipment enables rapid deployment nationwide. Contact us immediately at (919) 283-1023 for emergency service.

What documentation do you provide?

Every CXP project includes a complete commissioning package: cleaning protocol, executed batch records with signatures, time/temperature/concentration logs, verification test results (pH, conductivity, visual), chemical certifications with lot traceability, before/after photos, and acceptance certificates. Documentation meets FDA, EU GMP, and client-specific audit requirements per ASTM A380 and ASTM A967.
